Double-D – Defender 2-berth 4x4 Camper

Double D is my 2-berth 4x4 camper. He is a lovingly converted Landrover Defender 110 td5.

Double D is the perfect 4x4 camper for couples, those looking to drive a classic rugged machine. He will go most places without any difficulty at all but does like to be kept at 60mph on motorways. If trying out a true overland experience in a true classic with all the modern amenities is for you then Double-D is your choice.

The Camping Gear

what's in the box? To make the camping experience as comfortable I built a pull-out drawer system camping box. It's packed with all the camping gear in one large box that can be left in the vehicle or removed this includes cutlery, pots, pans, stove, water container, washing up kit, solar shower, first aid kit and more.

Included in the gear are two comfortable camping chairs, a full camping kitchen(if you prefer using the kitchen to the box), a windbreaker, and a camping table. These stack neatly in the boot over the camping box

The Build

I designed this build for couples, and started from the bottom up, removing all the original carpeting, seats and rusty parts. Then Denver was fully soundproofed to make the cabin more insulated.

The front seats were replaced with raised, super comfy TDCI seats. Durable Exmoor safari canvas was then put on the seats.

In the interior, I installed a useful cubby box for the front seats. The boot was then lined with wood to give it a nice camper feel. Being a two seater that gave me plenty of roof for storage solutions so a wooden box to fit all the camping gear was fitted and a shelf system around it to allow passengers to carry more gear on their trip. The boot can also double up as a cosy and useful sitting area in case of bad weather by sliding the box back and securing it in place, the box can also act as a comfortable table.

A new head unit, satnav, make the driving experience so much better really making it a pleasure to drive such a big machine.

A power bank has also been installed giving Double D power for most electrical needs like phones, and laptops. If you need to charge up the power bank it's as simple as plugging it into a power supply found in most campsites or, bars, cafe and so on.

finally, the side awning and badlands roof tent were installed to finish the build.
