Windsurfing Holidays in the UK & Europe

October 25, 2018 in Destinations, Tips for Travellers, Europe & United Kingdom

Would you like to experience an adventurous holiday that’s a little different to how you normally spend your vacation? If you enjoy relaxing but also staying active on your days off, you should definitely think about going on windsurfing holidays! The great thing about windsurfing is that it is much more accessible than surfing and many people enjoy it a lot, as it combines the fun of surfing with the possibilities of sailing. On top of all that, it is not a difficult sport to learn, so you can spend your vacation windsurfing from the first day until the last and really see yourself improving!

We bring you a guide of the best spots for windsurfing holidays in the UK and a few around Europe as well. At the end of this blog, we will also give you a few tips on what windsurfing equipment you may need, how to get it and what you shouldn’t forget to pack for your adventure!

Where to go

East Sussex

East Sussex is a popular UK windsurfing spot that offers conditions for different levels of ability depending on how well you already windsurf and what you are looking to improve. If you are looking for a place to learn windsurfing, Lagoon Water Sports in Hove is the place for you! Your teachers will take you both to the lagoon and once you are more confident, also to the open sea. If you want to get the most out of your windsurfing holiday, you should definitely come here!

Cornwall

Though you can go windsurfing almost anywhere around the coast of Cornwall, the conditions there tend to be more suitable for surfing, especially when it comes to beginners. However, the perfect place for windsurfing in Cornwall is Siblyback Lake near Liskeard. Here, wind conditions are ideal for windsurfing all year around, on top of which there is the Siblyback Water Sports Centre, where you can attend a short introductory course or even a more advanced one based on how comfortable you feel on your board. If you’re coming with a group of people and some of you do not feel like windsurfing or get tired, there is a very cozy tea room by the lake, where you can relax and still enjoy the picturesque views!Windsurfing Holidays in the UK & Europe H2 Goboony Windsurf Man Sun Sky Sea Nature

Dorset

Imagining windsurfing in Dorset may seem a little scary, especially if you’re a beginner, since you will be windsurfing at open sea. However, the waves here are always quite small, which makes it the perfect place for beginners! You can find specialised places, where you can learn how to windsurf all around Dorset, like for example the wonderful FC Water Sports Academy, Sandbanks, Poole. After only a two day course you will be ready with all that is needed to begin your windsurfing adventure!

Pembrokeshire

Last but not least, we want to tell you about Pembrokeshire! Wales is a place that is perfect for windsurfing, especially West Wales. Spring, early Summer and Autumn provide surfers with absolutely perfect conditions and you can find windsurfing schools all around. West Wales Wind, for example, is located in Dale, Fordwest and is a wonderful place to come to if you are looking to learn a bit more about how much you can really get from windsurfing. You can try out your board in the shallow, sheltered bay and once you are ready, explore the waters! On top of that, it is situated in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, so not only will you be surrounded by breathtaking nature but are also likely to have quite a bit of sunshine, that the area is known for!Windsurfing Holidays in the UK & Europe H2 Goboony Windsurf Wales Coast Sea Beach Nature Beautiful

Portugal

If you are looking to go on a windsurfing holiday outside of the UK, Portugal should definitely be on your list! With over 800 km of the Atlantic coastline, you are bound to find the perfect spot for you. Remember to always know what it is you are looking for; is it flat waters for beginners of crazy waves? Whatever you want, you will find here! There are numerous schools around as well, if you need some help in the beginning.

Netherlands

Perhaps you would not expect the Netherlands to be on this list, however, with the wind conditions around its coasts and also on the lakes, the Netherlands offers some of the best, most fun windsurfing spots! It may not be as warm as Portugal, however conditions for windsurfing are optimal in this beautiful country.

What to bring

Windsurfing is a sport you don’t have to do just in Summer - there are big windsurfing seasons both in Spring and Autumn. This means, however, that you should remember to bring a warm, full body wetsuit with you! You can always rent these out as well when you’re renting out windsurfing equipment, but if you are planning to keep going on windsurfing holidays, it is definitely worth it to invest in your own wetsuit, as you will save money on rent and can choose one that fits you perfectly.Windsurfing Holidays in the UK & Europe H2 Goboony Windsurf Sky Sea Surf Kite Wind

You can always rent a windsurfing board, sail and harness on site, though again if you prefer to invest in your own, there is a vast number of different ones on the market that you can choose from.

Something you should definitely buy is a rash vest to wear under your wetsuit. You will be sweating, moving around and all that might result in a rash if you’re not careful. A rash vest is an easy way to prevent discomfort during your adventures at sea! You can choose from many different kinds and brands and though they may not be the cheapest, they will really let you have a much better and comfier time!

Always, always use sunblock! Even if the weather isn’t perfectly sunny, you will be spending a lot of time outside and we all know you can get a sunburn even if you can’t see the sun. Another must is enough water to keep yourself hydrated, you will be using a lot of energy and could easily get dehydrated. Other optional windsurfing equipment you can bring are gloves, a helmet or ear plugs (if you are prone to infections).

So what are you waiting for? Rent a motorhome at Goboony so you can move around freely from beach to beach and chase the waves through the UK and Europe!
