Why Choose Southampton for Your Campervan Trip?

Southampton — a city worth exploring

Southampton has been a working port for over 2,000 years, and it was from these docks that the RMS Titanic set sail on her maiden voyage in April 1912 — a story told in detail at the SeaCity Museum. The city's medieval walls, among the best preserved in England, lead you past the Bargate, a 12th-century stone gateway that once served as the main entrance to the town. Tudor House and Garden reveals 800 years of history in one timber-framed building, while Solent Sky Museum houses over 20 aircraft including the Supermarine Spitfire, first flown from Southampton in 1936. The Southampton City Art Gallery holds one of the finest collections in southern England.

The New Forest National Park begins just 15 km west, and Winchester Cathedral is only 27 km north. Red Funnel ferries to the Isle of Wight depart from the city centre, and Bournemouth sits 40 km along the coast. These short distances make Southampton a strong base for a campervan trip through Hampshire.

With Goboony, you hire directly from local Southampton owners at peer-to-peer prices with a wide choice of campervans and motorhomes. Many owners offer collection points across the city, from Ocean Village to Eastleigh, so your trip starts where it suits you.

Best time to visit

The Southampton International Boat Show takes over Mayflower Park each September, drawing thousands of visitors across ten days and filling nearby campsites fast. Summer months bring the best weather for exploring the New Forest and catching a ferry to the Isle of Wight. For campervan travellers, booking your Goboony hire 8 to 10 weeks ahead for July and August is wise.

Spring and early autumn bring quieter campsites across Hampshire, lower peer-to-peer rates from local owners, and comfortable driving through the New Forest lanes and South Downs.

Southampton City Council does not generally permit overnight sleeping in public car parks. A designated oversized vehicle space is available at Harbour Parade long-stay car park near the Isle of Wight ferry terminal. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a campervan hire cost?

Campervan hire near Southampton typically costs £70 to £160 per night depending on vehicle size and season. A 2-berth campervan starts around £70, while a 4 to 6-berth motorhome runs £120 to £160 in peak summer. On Goboony, you hire from private owners at peer-to-peer prices, which often works out lower than traditional rental companies. Booking outside July and August can save you 20 to 30 per cent.

Where can I pick up a motorhome near Southampton?

Goboony owners offer pick-up points across Southampton and the surrounding area. Popular collection spots include Ocean Village, Shirley and Portswood, along with Eastleigh, Totton and Hedge End further out. Each owner sets their own location, so you can filter results by area when searching. You can often find a motorhome or campervan close to wherever you are staying in Southampton.

How can I find cheap campervan or motorhome hire in Southampton?

The easiest way is to compare listings on Goboony, where Southampton owners set their own prices. Travelling in spring or early autumn cuts costs, as peak summer rates are higher. Mid-week trips often cost less than weekend hires, and longer bookings of seven days or more usually come with a lower nightly rate. Check for owners offering last-minute deals for the best campervan savings near Southampton.

What's the best vehicle size for my group?

For couples, a 2-berth campervan is easy to park and drive on Southampton's city streets. Families of four suit a 4-berth motorhome with a kitchen, shower and separate sleeping areas. Groups of five or six should look at 6-berth models with more living space. On Goboony, filter by berth count and trip dates to find the right vehicle for your Southampton adventure in just a few clicks.

Are there dog-friendly campervans and motorhomes for hire near this destination?

Yes, many Goboony owners near Southampton welcome dogs in their campervans and motorhomes. Around half of listings are pet-friendly, though each owner's policy on dog numbers and size varies. Southampton is a great base for dog-friendly trips, with the New Forest, Southampton Common and the Isle of Wight coast all within easy reach. Check each listing's pet policy and look for vehicles with easy-clean flooring.

What our users say about campervan hire in Southampton

We have -sincerely- never encountered such a committed, friendly, reliable and above all helpful landlord as Gerry is. What a nice and relaxed man he is! He is easy to reach, or will contact you very quickly when you call or text him and he is unable to answer at that moment. Also the time of handover for pick up/return of the camper is mega flexible. It is important to do this on time because Gerry himself must be given the time to drive to the camper storage. He lives 45 minutes away from there. Despite the fact that we were delayed due to traffic jams, he took all the time to explain everything (which is also very extensive and quite overwhelming when you want to go on a camper holiday for the first time). You can watch YouTube videos via Goboony/Gerry, which will clarify a lot in advance. So definitely recommended. It is also wise - which is what we should have done - to write down some of the instructions as soon as Gerry explains them. We couldn't take everything in because we were tired and had travelled and because it was simply a lot. So then you search yourself completely afterwards. That's why there are those videos. You can watch them again at any time. There is also a very handy instruction book in the camper by the way. Easy to use. Gerrie's camper is great! Clean, very tidy and equipped with all amenities. You will not lack anything. Practically everything has been thought of. From toilet paper to kitchen cleaning supplies... It is all there. And also enough. We ourselves had brought bedding because you prefer to have your own things with you. Don't forget to bring pillows/duvets. Everything in the camper works and is easy to use. Even a separate battery to charge mobile etc. when the camper is stationary. We toured around South England. One recommendation! Stayed at some really cool campsites overlooking the sea. Very beautiful! And another advantage of 'camping': That you have your home with you wherever you go. Blessed! You arrive at a nice spot, stop your camper, chairs (very comfortable) outside with tables. It's set up in no time. Coffee, a sandwich and Enjoy!! Oh, just to mention: the people there, wherever we went, are so incredibly helpful and nice, when you want to know the way somewhere, or are looking for a campsite, just ask. We got so much help. One big thumbs up for the people there.
