Just book it already, you won't regret it in the least! Read on to find out why... Hi, I'm Dave and this was my best camper trip to date. Let's face not all of us can afford one nowadays, so spending a weekend in Ruby was an absolute pleasure. She's been converted from a LWB Caravelle and apart from her stunning good looks has some handy features that made a real difference to the whole experience.... We hired Ruby on a whim, as a surprise for my boys, during a 2 week stay in Cornwall at our usual spot in St Agnes. I've been an VW enthusiast since I was kid, and now I have of 2 of my own who are 8 and 10 (and a dog) we wanted to have the freedom to move around Cornwall as the weather was a bit unpredictable, and Ruby was on a special last minute discount. It was the best decision I made. Arranging the booking was extremely easy. Stu and Jan were incredibly fast to respond to any queries, were on standby all weekend to answer my calls, and made the whole process simple and stress free. On collection we did a full tour of the van, Stu explained how everything worked, where everything is stored (all you need is on board including local maps, discounts for local attractions, a book with the tide times for all the local beaches, VW magazines of course, and even poo bags for the dog!) They provided 2 sleeping bags with liners for the boys in the Pop-top and a super cozy double duvet, 4 pillows & sheets for the bed below, all in matching red of course. Being a LWB (Long Wheel Base) Caravelle, Ruby is incredibly well insulated, has great sound deadening and drives beautifully. In addition to this, there is enough room to setup the included table and 2 stools to have 4 seated in the back to eat, play cards etc without the need to swivel the double front passenger seat round, which was an absolute win. I am disabled and struggle with the swivel seats, and both boys like to ride up front so this was really handy and saved me a lot of cursing and pain! It also meant I had room to fit my wheelchair in the back without taking it apart. So travelling light isn't a necessity in this one, there is ample storage under the bed and in all the usual places too. The other massive advantage to being based on a caravelle, is the ability to gain access to the storage cupboards/water tank/waste water/gas bottle from the drivers side passenger door whilst the bed is still pulled out. If you've an early riser and wanted a cuppa without waking everyone, you'll appreciate this feature. Once again not having to put the bed away to get a cup/spoon/turn gas back on or off etc was fab. So what did we do? Everything! We based ourselves at The Lizard with spectacular views in a non electric pitch and followed the sunshine each day. Not that we had far to go. When you're in Ruby people smile, other VW drivers wave ✌️which the kids loved, locals let you pass on account of having Cornish plates, and when you are parked up so many people come and have a chat, it really does enhance the whole experience. Plus, it's an open invite to go and check out everyone else's campers too! We parked in the NT car park at Kynance Cove and setup for bacon sandwiches and tea before tackling the hike down to the beach. There really is something special about being able to cook with stunning views that just makes everything better. Also, having somewhere to lie down after said hike was bliss. We popped up the top and unzipped the skyline for an amazing nap in the sun before driving on. Nighttime was equally enjoyable. Ruby has a diesel heater if you get chilly, but with the insulation and bed linen it wasn't necessary. She has several sets of Led lights for brightness, and some low level lights for mood setting which was nice. Once again, we popped the roof and watched the stars for hours and made smores and hot chocolate on the stove. The rest of the weekend went by in a blur. We did so much, visited so many beaches, national trusts, and got to places we never would have tried in the car. We're not new to Cornwall, we love it there, but being able to hire a camper to go that little bit further and stay out a little longer for Sunsets and sunrises, cook ups and freshly brewed coffee at the beach (without the queues) , made for some everlasting memories. We will most definitely be back to see Stu and Jan and Ruby soon. Thank you Guys! August 2023
